Ground a Teen Creatively

Sometimes, if parents are the grounding kind, we get into a rut with our grounding routine. Maybe it's time to think outside the box. Here are a couple of suggestions for you.

Instructions

Step 1
Think about what you are grounding your teen for.

Step 2
Try to think of a grounding method that directly relates to the problem.

Step 3
An example of this is: Our teenager was caught sneaking out the window and staying out until morning. We decided that since he needed extra supervision, it would be easier to do without a bedroom door. Thus, he was grounded from having a door. We took it off the hinges and took it to the basement. He didn't like this very well at all.

Step 4
Another example is: A friend of his was neglecting his chores. He was told repeatedly to go to the chicken house and pick up eggs. He continued to play video games instead. His grandfather finally got fed up, went to the fuse box and cut off his electricity. He was grounded from electricity. The problem with this was it wasn't something the grandfather was willing to stand behind for any length of time, because it cut the electricity off to something he wanted to use, so he gave it back in just a couple of days.
