Know Where Your Teenager is At Night

You want to trust your teenager. You know you have raised a great kid. But you have seen Phil and Oprah, not to mention the commercials. You also know what the Other Kids are doing. I mean, not to mention what you were doing when you were her age...

Instructions

Step 1
Ask your teen where they are going, who they are going with and what time they will be home. Get a name, phone number and address of where they will be.

Step2
Smile, tell them to have a good evening, to be safe, have fun and a god time. Make sure that they understand that you reserve the right to check on them because it is your job to keep them safe. If they have a cell phone, make sure that they understand that they are to pick up when you call.

Step3
If they will be at a party or at another person's house, call in advance and make sure an adult will be home. Speak to the adult. Not all adolescents are problem teens, however, you never know who the siblings or friends of friends are that may show up at the houses they are going to.

Step4
During the course of the evening, call your child. If they are at a person's house, have them call you back from a "land-line" and unblock the phone number so that you can see the number from where they are calling. If they cannot do so in 5 minutes, let them know you may drive by. Drive by, especially if they have had "problems" in the past.

Step5
If they are in a public place, tell them to send you a picture on their cell phone of themselves and the friend they are with, with the name of the place in the background. If you do this a few times- they will know you are serious about wanting to know where they are.

Step6
If you are suspicious about where they are at, drive by to pick them up. Always reserve the right to perform a drug test without warning. Drug tests can be purchased online or over the counter.

Step7
If you have dropped our child off at one place and believe they are sneaking around- let's say the movies- have a friend tell the manager of the movies they want to check on their kids- have your friend go into the theater, find your child and make sure they are where they say they are.

Step8
If your child is a repeat offender, or has been caught using or dealing drugs, consider taking your child to the cell phone store and purchasing them a GPS device for their car or phone, or by special computer programs that will let you view your child's computer activity. Only do this in dire situations where trust and laws have already been broken. let your child know that you will do whatever you need to do in order to keep them safe. With that caveat, they will know that this is fair game. This move will not build trust- but it may help you monitor them.

Step9
If your child is basically a good kid- you know- passing their classes, but just seems a little off--- try talking to them first. You may find out a lot.
